The long struggle with consistency

A three week 'cold' has stalled a period with consistently good mileage. I've struggled through as the illness has varied in its intensity, to it's current guise of a complete strike action by my respiratory system - gutted.

It seems whenever one starts to see a real tangible improvement in mile volume something, be it injury or illness attempts to thwart me. Still I've got to look on the positives;
1. My mileage is steadily increasing
2. I've gone from my first half marathon to ultra distance in 12 months

Clearly patience is key. However I'm struck with the impending feeling of mortality. Running towards my mid-thirties, the only solace I can take is the alleged fact that ultra performance doesn't, apparently reduce until middle age. I've got to have some faith in this, although I think it clearly applies to greater ultra distance, such as 100 milers. I'm some time off my first 100, optimistically at least a year to 18 months.

When I recover from this horrendous man-flu I'll endeavour to pick up and continue the momentum. I'm gearing to go, but starting too early again will only set me back. The major issue is my lungs. I'm concerned that pushing too hard too soon will only serve to cause some long term damage.

I'll take solace in the fact that this is merely a cold, yet an injury might have me out for weeks or months.
